The details

You’re a mid-career creative professional, digital designer, and/or solopreneur who has a working knowledge of Photoshop capabilities. You
1) want to have more control over your product documentation,
2) would like to bring in-house the consistent need for refined photography, and
3) would like a greater understanding of industry-standard retouching to execute or delegate your needs better.

This course will cover specific Photoshop tools and methods: professional skin and hair retouching, color and light correction, background and object removal, creating transparent shadows and layers, and much more!

Students will also learn how to use these methods effectively, how to use a nuanced touch to avoid controversial results, and insider industry standards and best practices. The course format will allow students to follow along with live instruction, and then practice on their own. Students will graduate with a personal project that will be evaluated live. Absolute beginners to Photoshop will need to take a basic Photoshop course (free, provided) as a prerequisite.

Course breakdown

Week 1
The Retouching Industry + Adjusting Backgrounds & Objects
Intro to instructor, course subject, and industry Q&A. We will begin by learning how to remove, extend, or manipulate backgrounds and objects within an image using various selection and patch/healing tools in addition to generative AI.

Week 2
Color and Light Correction Using Selective Tools and Adjustment Layers
This class will dive deep into adjustment layers and selection tools to achieve global and partial light and color manipulations.

Week 3
Hair and Skin Retouching
In this class, we will cover two methods of skin retouching: frequency separation and dodge & burn. We will also go over how to use previously learned techniques to manipulate hair.

Week 4
Creating Transparent Shadows and Layers + Bonus Tools
This class will cover an array of techniques useful for e-commerce and marketing. We will: Use layer masks to create real transparent shadows as PNG. Create gifs from multi-frame imagery using the timeline tool. Explore filter gallery manipulations such as liquify, blur, sharpen, and grain. Students will have the option to choose an image for final evaluation and sign up for an allotted timeslot for live critical feedback.

Week 5
Assessment Evaluation + Industry Q&A
In the final class, we will cover the optional student assessment for the first 30 minutes. The rest of the session will be an open forum Q&A focusing on industry best practices. Continuing education, contact, and other resources will be distributed.
